Feed In Tariff

Solar PV Systems convert the sun’s energy into usable electricity which is connected to your property’s electrical distribution system. An additional meter is installed to monitor how much power is produced by the Solar PV system. This is measured in kWh units, your utility company uses this same unit (kWh) for the electricity it charges you for and is shown on your electricity bill.

In 2010 the government created an incentive to encourage people in the UK to install Solar PV systems this is called the “Feed In Tariff” or F.I.T. scheme.

Owners of Domestic and Commercial Solar PV systems are paid to produce electricity from their systems. For every unit of electricity (kWh) that is produced by the Solar PV system, this is a set rate which differs depending on the size of system. The rates will be reduced in April 2012. A fee is paid for 50% of the electricity produced which the government assumes will be fed back into the national grid.
